About Us

I first became interested in energy conservation as a result of doing some research for an article I was writing.

I learned that half of the electricity consumed in the US is generated by coal-powered power plants.  I was shocked by the amount of coal required to generate that electricity it takes a pound of coal to generate a single kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity. Burning one 100-watt light bulb for a year requires 900 pounds of coal, produces about a ton of CO2 plus releases a number of chemicals into the air!

The problem I discovered is that most people, like me, have no gut-level sense of the natural resources we irrevocably use up to make the electricity that we consume every day without any thought as to the long term costs — electricity is just a bunch of electrons that are largely theoretical to us.

I created the CoalCube™ and founded Kilowatt Coal Company because I firmly believe that if people have a tangible, physical concept of the amount of coal that is required to create the electricity that powers their lifestyle, they would make a more focused effort to consume less of it.

Of course, conservation not only saves natural resources, it improves the environment and saves money as well  — the average price for the energy to burn a 100-watt light bulb all year is $93.29. It pays to flip the switch! We only have one Earth, lets each do our part to clean it up. Not being able to do everything is no excuse for doing nothing!
